چکیده

OBJECTIVES To review current knowledge of tooth whitening with respect to external bleaching methods. DATA The scope is the external bleaching of vital teeth and focuses on mechanisms; in vivo and in vitro measurement methods, and factors influencing the efficacy of the whitening process. SOURCES "Medline" and "ISI Web of Science" databases from 1966 and 1974, respectively were searched electronically with key words tooth, teeth, colo*r, white*, bleach* and peroxide. CONCLUSIONS The importance of tooth whitening for patients and consumers has seen a dramatic increase in the number of products and procedures over recent years, with a concomitant rise in publications on this topic. Literature suggests that the mechanisms of tooth whitening by peroxide occur by the diffusion of peroxide through enamel to cause oxidation and hence lightening of coloured species, particularly within the dentinal regions. A number of approaches are available for measuring changes in tooth colour. These include visual measurements by trained clinicians and instrumental measurements using spectrophotometry, chromameters and digital image analysis. The key factors that affect tooth whitening efficacy by peroxide containing products are concentration and time. In general, higher concentrations are faster than lower concentrations. However, lower concentrations can approach the efficacy of higher concentrations with extended treatment times. Alternative bleach systems to peroxide have received only minor attention. The efficacy of light activated systems versus non-light activated controls in clinical studies is limited and conflicting. Other factors which can influence tooth bleaching outcome include type of stain, initial tooth colour and subject age.

Antioxidants reduce microleakage of resin-based composite fillings and the associated toxicity after bleaching human teeth

Background: Bleaching teeth is popular because the discoloration is a major people’s concern. This study aimed to compare the effect of three antioxidants on the microleakage of composite resin filling after bleaching teeth with 35% H2O2, thus minimizing the potential clinical toxicity of filling materials entering patients’ body. Methods: Sixty-six extracted intact teeth were included in this...

A comparetive study of the effects of home and office bleaching on enamel surface roughness

Introduction: Increase in enamel surface roughness after bleaching is one of its major side effects. The purpose of this study is to compare changes in enamel surface roughness following bleaching with home versus office bleaching agents. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, forty human sound premolar teeth were divided into 4 groups, randomly. Ten teeth were bleached using hydrog...

Microleakage comparison of resin modified glass ionomer and OrthoMTA used as a coronal barrier in nonvital teeth bleaching

Background and Aim: Common causes of dental discoloration include trauma, drugs, genetic defects, decay, and age. In order to correct discoloration of pulpless teeth, internal bleaching is recommended. The aim of this study was to compare microleakage of resin modified glass ionomer and OrthoMTA used as an intraorifice barrier in non-vital bleaching. Materials and Methods: In this experimental ...

بررسی کلینیکی اثر تغییرات pH هیدروژن پراکساید 35% بر توانایی سفیدکنندگی رنگ دندان در روش سفید کردن در مطب

Introduction: Office bleaching is one of the conservative and common treatments for teeth discoloration. Because of increasing shelf life, most of the whitening gels contain a pH near 2 and that is below the critical level, which caused the enamel demineralization. The aim of this research was investigating the clinical study of changing the bleaching agent's pH for improving the color of disco...

Assessment of micro-leakage for light-cure glass ionomer and pro-root mineral trioxide aggregate as coronal barriers in intracoronal bleaching of endodontically treated teeth

Introduction: Cervical root resorption is one of the most important complications of intra coronal bleaching. A way of preventing this type of resorption is using a coronal barrier under the bleaching materials. The aim of this study was to compare the sealing ability of glass ionomer cement and Pro Root Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) as a coronal barrier in intra coronal bleaching. Materi...
